What makes a good fandom?

If like me you are obsessive  about a certain movie/book series you know all the ins and outs of it you cry when a character dies, smile when they are happy and love the shock twists and turns. But what makes a film or book enter the geek realm and become a fandom. Well lets look at the two earliest Star trek, Star wars and Lord of the rings. First you have everyman lead characters Luke skywalker, James t Kirk and Frodo baggins a main character which isn't any thing special compared look at frodo he doesn't say anything funny half the time gets rescued by Sam. Then you have the side stories which are far from the main and a lot more memorable merry and pippin being captured.
The best Fandom.
But Frodo he's as boring as you can get. Same with Harry potter he may get to fight Voldemort but no fun lines he is what people want to be with the cool friends. Kirk had spock and the other (I don't know I like star wars so there). Even Luke skywalker the lead character of the star wars trilogy was dull and boring people forget that when they bitch about Anakin being dull. These aren't the most popular charcters in their franchises Han solo and Spock get these, why? Because they get the fun lines the great memorable parts they are the best friends we wanted at school. Not the to be cool guy the one who shared the adventure with them.
It's one of dem elvish bastards.
So when we saw the lead character not being the cool guy but the everyman who goes on these great adventures. We want some of that and we enjoy it, we enjoy the excitement the thrill and then once we've lived it with them it comes to community we enjoy reliving with like minded friends who got something else from the series and seeing it through their eyes and fresh take on what we hold so dear. I love star wars and sci fi, though I may not see eye to eye on other franchises I can see why they like them.
