Are Trophies and achievements ruining games? Using science and stuff.
This is what was put forward prior to the playstation 3 having trophies by playstation players. To be honest I don't see the point unless you are a copletionist that I am not. So getting trophies are not the biggest thing to me. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the little blong when I recieve one, I just won't go out of my way to get them. What you may not know is that blong releases Dopamine, a chemical that is connected to pleasure also is released when we view an attractive face, dopamine is released in the same reward pathway that is stimulated when we eat delicious food, make money, have sex, or use cocaine. See that the same chemical that is released on sight of a trophy is the same chemical that cocaine releases and is just as addictive. So even if the game is awful early trophies and the frequency can and in some cases make you want to play because are you looking for you next hit in a very literal way. An addict to dopamine can be usually described as gambling addict because of the dopamine hit they are looking for. When a game has short levels and therefore many and frequent trophies can and has been given high ratings by critics because of the pleasure that little blong gives. Take the call of duty games incredibly short games yet always given high marks though after many gamers have said that it's awful, we can only speculate the high score is given because of the frequent trophy output and the pleasure that gives. Developers may not need know about neuroscience to exploit this just find a pattern that works, random fights can also assist with the excretion of dopamine, by being unready for the attack the win becomes more pleasurable to our brains. Our brains love patterns and regularity so random attacks like in pokemon with a win or capture produces a higher amount of dopamine. So a trophy that is earned via a headshot number or unplanned reason also injects this high volume of dopamine so again making us continue for next unexpected trophy. These are the reasons they are ruining gaming because once earned you don't get them again replayabilty goes out of the window the feel of earning the dopamine hit is obsolete and can lead to a feeling depressed and so gives less of reason to replay and giving game companies a reason to force out a game on yearly basis because of the new trophy hit these games will bring and again charging the £40 for it. Giving us that hit means they don't even have to put all that effort into the new games just increase the frequency of the dopamine hit and we're are hooked until the next one. Without trophies I speculate that game developers will need to put more effort in for us to play not just taking advantage of our own brain chemistry.
